2 Kings 2:1 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
KJV
This morning we see Elijah’s great reward for staying faithful, for continuing to serve, for getting apart and alone with the Lord as he left this world the same way he began his service for the Lord, in a whirlwind. What has always impressed me about Elijah is that he was a man just like us. (James 5:17-18 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.) That great man of God had the same weaknesses that all of us have, the same doubts and fears, he was a man “Subject to like passions as we are.” Yet Elijah found great strength when he spent those times apart and alone with his Lord. That is why Satan attacks the child of God in the ways he does today, trying to interrupt our times of prayer and Bible reading, times when we can be in the house of God, times when we can sit under the preaching of the Word of God. Christian, beware when the enemy tries to take those times away from you for there is another way Elijah was like us and we are like him. (1 Kings 19:7 And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.)
