October 6th, 2026 by Pastor Solley1 Kings 19:7-12 And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

It is obvious that Elijah was worn out and worn down by the events of the past three years. The first meeting with Ahab, being hunted and lied about, provided for by God, the second meeting with Ahab and the battle with the false prophets, calling down not only fire but rain through prayer, and then being threatened by Jezebel. Elijah was worn out, weary, just as we are many times in this life. We may not go through what the prophet did but we all have our battles to face and all at times are weary with this world. Elijah wanted to see something great from God again, that great wind, the mountain being moved and broken as we see in verse eleven, fire again as we see in verse twelve. But God came to Elijah in a still small voice and then we see the prophet refreshed. We need as well some quiet times with our Lord and Savior, times when we shut the rest of the world out and listen for that still small voice. That is the reassuring voice, the refreshing voice we need to hear. We do want and need miracles, I pray for them each day. But we also need just to hear that whisper in our ear, that voice that is just for us in our time of need, that calm and reassuring voice that our God is near and He cares. That is much better than an earthquake.
