Ps 56:1-3 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.
2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
KJV
I find it very comforting that David would say “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” David in his youth stood against a lion, a bear, and a giant that put fear into the heart of the greatest soldiers in the army of Israel. Then David led Israel against armies that outnumbered them and it seemed that David never showed himself afraid. Yet he did not say “If I ever am afraid” of “I have never been afraid” David stated “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” We are not alone when we awake in the night afraid of what tomorrow may bring, or when we find ourselves facing things we would rather not, or even when we don’t know why we are afraid for I see David stating “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Like David what we need do at those times, and they will come upon all of us, is trust in the Lord. The Holy Spirit used the greatest king of Israel to write down those words and then used his son to write down these ones from Proverbs chapter three “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Trust in the one who does all things well.
