3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

I meditate often on the words in verse two above, “The joy set that was set before him”. I find little joy in the reason Jesus had to endure the cross, little joy for the cause of sickness, suffering and death today, little joy in the way sin is overtaking this world today, little joy in the way Jesus is mocked today, little joy when I think about those things. But Jesus found joy the Bible says and every Word of God is true. Where does the joy come from? The joy came when Jesus looked beyond the cross, when Jesus looked down through the ages and saw wretched sinners like me turn to Him, when Jesus looked at mansions He would be preparing, when Jesus knew sin and Satan would be defeated forever, when Jesus knew this world was not Him home and not the home of those who would place faith and trust in Him. More suffering than any other would ever know was awaiting Jesus on that cross but Jesus found joy when looked at all who would place their faith and trust in Him and have sin washed away and forgiven by His shed blood. Look first to the cross today and then look with joy at what is waiting for those who are born again in Christ.
