7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Have you ever wondered after reading this passage what it was that made Jesus fear? (Verse 7) It couldn’t be the band that came to arrest Him for Jesus could have called more than twelve legions of angels. It couldn’t have been storms of the sea for with a word Jesus calmed them. It couldn’t have been pains of hunger for Jesus could feed the multitudes. It couldn’t even have been the fear of death for Jesus has power over life and death. What could have made Jesus fear? I look at Jesus in the garden as the weight of the sin of the world began to settle on His shoulders, as He was taken and mocked and beaten by the religious council, as He was delivered to Pilate and beaten and scourged, as He walked to Calvary, as He was hung on the cross, and wonder if Jesus in His humanity feared not being able to announce that “It is finished”. Only Jesus could be that sacrifice for sin, only the blood of Jesus is able to wash away sin, only Jesus can take one from hell to heaven, only Jesus can do that. But Jesus had to finish the work and praise Him today for He did just that. But what if Jesus had died during the beatings, during the scourging, during the walk to Calvary, what if Jesus had died before He could say “It is finished”? Then we would all be in fear today. I wonder about such things and thank Jesus today for finishing the work of salvation and saving me.
