John 15:1-4 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
KJV
If our abiding in Christ is to remain there must be a cleansing as well and that cleansing will involve a purging. Fruit trees need to be pruned as the branches that do not aid in providing fruit are cut back and the cuttings done away with. They are no good for the tree and must be removed. So must we as believers in Christ go through a pruning process, a purging process, a cleansing process to continue to abide in Christ. Things that the Holy Spirit convicts us of need to be removed from our lives. As we are cleansed we are drawn closer and closer to our Lord and Savior. As we draw closer the abiding in Christ becomes sweeter and sweeter. As we abode the Holy Spirit is free to continue to work in us and the fruit of the Spirit is produced in our lives. There are times when the cleansing process is difficult as our flesh fights to hang onto the world. But when we stand clean before Jesus His abiding presence makes whatever may be removed in our lives seem like a very little loss. We gain all the more in Christ and win more than we have given up. (Phil 3:7-8 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,) May it be our desire to win Christ, to be cleansed and abide in Him.
