Daily devotions

4 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
KJV
There is so much unrest today in just about every area of life and every part of society. More mass shootings, more school shootings, our politicians lying to us and being accused of lying, troubles in homes, in families, in churches, there is simply no place to find rest. Yet the Bible tells us that there is a promise of rest. Like many I look to the day that I will be with Jesus and finally be at perfect rest and peace. Yet the promise of rest is also for this day and age however hard that is to believe. Why then do so many people miss that promise of rest? I am not speaking about those lost in sin, but those who profess to know Jesus Christ as personal savior as so many professing Christian seem to lack the rest God has promised. The answer to this, at least part of the answer lies in the people who first received that promise. The “They” in verse three looks back at Israel as they came out of Egypt and headed to the Promised Land, that generation never found the rest God promised. Today many believers lack the rest God promised and most of the time because we fall into the same things that Israel did. For today think of Israel in the wilderness and tomorrow we will name several things that kept them from rest and will keep us from rest as well.
