11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
KJV
In light of the Second Coming of Christ we find that the Christian is to live soberly. (Verse 12) I want to apply this in two areas this morning, the first being that we are to live apart from drunkenness. I know that is not the original interpretation and we will get to that in a moment, but alcohol has taken over society today. There are wineries popping up all over the place, micro breweries, our nation is consumed with strong drink which the Bible clearly condemns. That is not the way I was raised, I am not old fashioned, wine, strong drink, they are condemned in the Bible and they are not for the Christian. Yet I hear more and more Christians saying that social drinking is OK, that one shouldn’t be a stick in the mud. Find that in the Bible for me and I will change my position. Many a home and life has been lost because of alcohol and it has no place in the life of the Christian. Soberly also means to live seriously and that is the interpretation above. Why is our Christian life the last thing many believers take seriously? They know about sports, about cars, about making money, about racing, about off roading, about many things except the Bible and what they need to be doing for God. The most important thing in life is our relationship with God through Christ, and we need to be serious about it. If I do not take my relationship with my wife serious, it will fall apart. The same with my relationship with God. But how much or how little thought and effort do you put into that relationship, especially in light of the fact that we are living in the last days? Be sober.
