Acts 13:1-3 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

A missionary has a call from God, that is his or her credentials, nothing more is needed. But that call is recognized by others and then the missionary is sent, first by God which we will see, but sent by a church as well. Missionaries have sending churches and so did Paul and Barnabas. What does this sending involve, what are the responsibilities of a sending church? The first is prayer, they were sent out after prayer and fasting. Prayer for the missionaries is not to end when they go out, that is only a beginning. It is easy for people to forget to pray for the missionaries their local church supports, but they need our prayers. Money is also involved although not mentioned in this passage. It took money for Paul and Barnabas to move about and so does it take money for one to be a missionary today. Paul also worked while on the mission field and it takes hard work to be a missionary. Many I know personally work hard not only at serving the Lord, but others things as well. Our brother in Canada works at cutting firewood to heat his house, planting a large garden and canning and so on. This helps keep his cost of living down, he works hard. Most all missionaries do and because they do they deserve support from God’s people. First in prayer, then in money, but they need and deserve support.
