Ex 7:13-14 And he hardened Pharaoh’s heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.
14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.
KJV
How is it that God hardened the heart of Pharaoh? Some mistakenly believe that Pharaoh had no opportunity to repent, no opportunity to be saved. That thought goes against the volume of Scripture. The initial hardening of Pharaoh’s heart was done by that man himself when he challenged the authority of God. (Ex 5:1-2 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.) This hardening by Pharaoh continued. (Ex 8:32 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.) Hearts do become hard as man rejects God and disobeys God. Not only is this true in unbelief, but Christians can harden their hearts as well against obedience to the Word of God. Then as God begins to deal with His children they often react as Pharaoh did, walking farther and farther away from God. Not all that happens to a believer is because of a heart hard against God, but we need be sure each day that we are open and receptive to the voice of God, be sure we are yielded to God, be sure we are walking in obedience to God.
