1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
KJV
I love to sit and listen to older saints, to gain from their wisdom, to hear of what they have seen in their lifetimes, to listen to those who have walked the road I am on. John wrote this epistle near the end of a long life of service for Jesus Christ. This is of course the inspired Word of God, every word the Holy Spirit used the aged apostle to write down is from God, not from John. Still, the Holy Spirit used John to pen these words near the end of his life for a reason, we do see the heart and the experience of John as an older saint.
The first thing that stands out to me is how salvation changed the life of John. The first part if this chapter is written in the perfect tense in the Greek language. That tense points to a past action that has continuing effects. John looks back at something that took place about 60 years before and tells us in no uncertain terms that event so long ago in his life still effects him daily. What was that event? The time he met Jesus Christ. (1 Jn 1:1-2; John 1:34-51) When John met Jesus he became a changed man, John was given new life, eternal life because of his faith and trust in Jesus Christ. All those years later it is as if it happened that very same day with John. Why was salvation so real to John, so fresh to John, so life changing to John? It should be that way for every true born again child of God. We will consider this week some of the things that made salvation so real to John. Today, be sure you are in the faith, be sure you are born again.
