Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Luke 23:39-43 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
KJV
Something was being offered at Calvary that day that was never offered there before, life. Calvary was the place of death and Jesus Christ went there to die a sacrificial death, went there to offer His life and shed His blood for the sins of all men. None could have been more glad to realize that than the thief hanging next to Jesus on his own cross. That man was going to die for crimes committed against Rome and society, Jesus was going to die for him. When that man realized that we are not sure, he also mocked Jesus as they were brought to that place of death. But sometime during the events of that day he came to see himself as he was, a sinner condemned justly to die, and also see Jesus as He was and is, a just man, a sinless man, the Son of God, the one who could save him. Life was offered and that man received it. Life is still offered at Calvary and still received and rejected in the same way. The other man condemned to death saw all that the one who cried out to Jesus did, yet he chose to remain in his sin, chose to die without repentance, chose to spend eternity in hell. What is your choice today?
