Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
KJV
This is the only time the word Calvary appears in the Bible, but do not overlook the importance of that place. From the event recorded in Genesis chapter 3, the fall of man, everything in the Bible points to Calvary. Now as we are separated by thousands of years everything still points back to Calvary. An isolated place, yet the focal point of all of human history, that is what Calvary is. It is that because of what took place there at one moment of time and who it was that went to Calvary. Calvary was the place where condemned prisoners were put to death. I have no idea how many died at Calvary, hundreds for sure, thousands most likely, but only one death made a difference in the history of mankind. It was at Calvary Jesus died, and Jesus did die my friend. Like all of those before Him, and we have no idea how many after, Jesus suffered and died at Calvary. He was nailed to a cross, used most likely many times before, His blood stained that cross, His arms and legs were torn from their sockets, His side was pierced by a sword, and Jesus died at Calvary. One to the next case, on to the next citification. But wait, something was different about Jesus, something makes Calvary stand out because Jesus died there, something was different about that man, about that blood that was shed, but what? I want to consider Calvary this week and what made His death different from all others even though thousands died just as He did on cross just like His. What made Calvary different when Jesus died there?
