2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Why did Peter say no when Jesus would wash his feet? Did he consider himself unworthy, or is there something else here? There is something else and it is called pride. Remember Peter is one so proud that he would rebuke Jesus. (Matt 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.) Peter had a measure of pride that comes out more than one time in the gospel accounts.
(Matt 26:35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.) Peter was given to pride and that would have to be worked out of him. Even in refusing to have Jesus wash his feet it was pride coming out in Peter I believe, now the others could see how humble he was and how much more caring for Jesus. Pride is something that will rear its ugly head in many ways and pride is something we all have a problem with to one degree or another. But pride in self is never a good thing as we see his pride get Peter into trouble time and time again. What of our actions, even those that seem to be so humble? Be sure pride is not at the root of our actions for it is pride that leads to a fall. Jesus ask Peter.
