John 13:1-5 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Some lessons in humility this week. There are those who take this passage and use it to promote feet washing today, but I don’t believe that is what the Holy Spirit is trying to get across here. I do believe we have some lessons in humility in this chapter that we are to take to heart and practice today. I want to begin this morning with Jesus Christ and the one who took that basin and towel and washed the feet of His disciple. Here is the one that it states very simply in verse 3 had all things given into His hands. Jesus had all things given into his hands because He is Lord of all things, has rule over all things, is King of kings and Lord of lords. There are angels in heaven at this very moment crying out “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty” to Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke this world into being, holds it all together, knows all things, and all that was true of Him in John 13 just as it is true of Him today. If anyone should have been washing feet that night it should have been His disciples washing His feet, not the other way around. What one of them deserved Jesus to do anything for them that put Christ in the position of a servant? Not one, yet there He was stooping before them. Let this be the first lesson in humility this week. We should be as willing to serve others as Jesus was no matter our station in life or what we think our station is. Are you willing to stoop before others, are you willing to serve?
