Rom 6:1-7 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
KJV
Why is it important that one get baptized? Is it because of what baptism does for us, what it secures for us? Is it because of what one misses if one does not get baptized? Why is it important for one to get baptized? Baptism serves as a picture, an outward picture of an inward act. We see in our text this morning that baptism shows the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism shows what a Christian has believed, then received placing their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for forgiveness of sin and salvation. Buried with Him in death one goes under the water, raised with Him one comes up out of the water, then there is a new life to live, one that brings glory and honor to the resurrected savior. Jesus Christ was changed after the resurrection even as the Christian is to be saved because of salvation and walk in newness of life. Baptism is a picture of our new life in Christ. Who then should show this picture? Each and every born again believer in Christ. More tomorrow on baptism.
