Dan 4:27-31 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.
28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.
29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.
30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.
KJV
Another reason people are unthankful is pride. Nebuchadnezzar was a man full of pride. After having been warned of God to humble himself and repent the king continued in his prideful ways. Notice his world in verse 30, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built”. The man was the king but the city was built with the monies of conquered lands and with the sweat of slaves. It could be said that the king never lifted a finger or spent a dime of his own money in building that great city with its hanging gardens and beautiful gates. Babylon was one of the ancient wonders of the world, Nebuchadnezzar was the king, but what did he build himself? Yet his pride lifted him up to a point that God knocked him down. Many today are not thankful because of pride, a pride that always lifts self up and never allows one to say thank you to anyone for anything.
