Ps 51:10-17
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
KJV

Having now come to the point of wanting God to deal with us, what is our desired end, what do we want in our relationship with God? Not merely a life of going through the motions of being a Christian. (Verse 16) Not to be seen as a good Christian because we go to church, dress right, talk right, go to the right places and stay out of the wrong ones. But to be a Christian in heart and in a relationship with God where He matters most and we matter not. Notice verse 17 this morning, what God desires in us. A life of brokenness needs not be a life of constant grief and sorrow, in fact it is just the opposite as we will see tomorrow morning. But we do need to be broken of self, of the flesh and of the world before we can be truly alive unto God. Yet how few of us want a life of brokenness, how few of us Christians really desire a life completely given to Jesus Christ. That is David’s desire here. No wonder God called David a man after His own heart. What are we after in our lives today?
