Prov 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

A wise saying or a promise, which is it? A wise saying for sure because we find it in the book of Proverbs. But if this is a promise why then do so many from Christian homes, why do so many who were taken to church by their parents fall away from the Lord? The problem will lie not in the promise, but in the home. David who was a man after God’s own heart lost his children to the world. Eli the priest had children who served Satan. C.I. Scofield had a son who denied the existence of God. Billy Sunday on his death bed commented that he had won America for Christ but had lost his own son to the world. The problem is in the home, not in the promise and even the most dedicated Christian can have a problem in the home if every part of it is not under the control of the Lord. David had many wives, Eli had many duties, Scofield many studies and Sunday many travels. All of them neglected the one thing that needed them the most, the home. I knew of a pastor many years ago who said that he was going to let Jesus raise his children, he was going to build the church. He had it backwards as Jesus said He will build the church and commanded that we train our children. I have often wondered how that turned out. Parents your children need to be trained and that takes time and effort. It takes being consistent and determined. It also means giving them an example to follow. Train them and you will find the promise to be true.
