12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
As Christians we are called the “Salt of the earth” by Christ. Why salt? Without looking at how valuable salt was to the people at that time I can think of just a few things this morning. First, salt makes one thirsty, thirsty for water, we know the Lord Jesus Christ is the “Living water”, salt ought to make one thirsty for that living water. Christians by their life, by their joy, through their walk in the Lord ought to make others thirsty for the Lord. That is the problem with the watered down Christianity of our day, it makes no one thirsty for Christ. Just as water ruins salt, so does the watered down Christian harm and hinder the work of the Lord. Salt preserves, but only if it is used to preserve. I can remember my grandparents talking about the salt and ice houses where things were preserved. But if you left the perishable outside, if you never applied the salt, there was no preserving. So it is with the Christian today, if we stand by say nothing as this world plunges deeper and deeper into the darkness of sin, we do no earthly good. One needs to speak up and stand up. Salt also can irritate if it is poured into a wound. We ought to irritate the lost with our Godly character and walk, with our love and joy. That only happens if we are poured into the world around us. I did not say we become like the world around us, we just live for Christ in it. We are the salt of the earth.
