April 2nd, 2015 by Pastor SolleyJohn 18:19-23 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
Why indeed smite Jesus? For telling the truth, for Bible doctrine, for the miracles, for being the Messiah, why smite Jesus? It was for all the stated reasons. Israel wanted a king but they did not want the King, the one who would walk with God and rule as God directed in His Word. Jesus is smitten today for the very same reasons, for doctrine, for truth, for the Word of God. Speak Bible doctrine to people, speak the words of Jesus and people are offended. I wonder what would happen if at just one of the many community services you see taking place at Easter time one person would speak the truth of the Word of God? They speak parts of truth, they talk about God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice, they talk about heaven and what Jesus did to secure that. But they fail to mention that works will not save, the church will not save, good intentions will not save. They fail to mention sin and repentance, judgment and hell for those who fail to repent, they fail to mention false religion, false doctrine and false prophets. They leave out more than they bring out. When you bring out the truth you find that people still want to smite Jesus today.
