The phrase “Little children” is used 9 times by the Apostle John in I John and it reminds me that parents never stop worrying, praying over, and caring for their children. These little children are not the natural children of John, they are spiritual children, those younger in the Lord. Still, it is a good illustration of how parents look at their children as they grow older, they are still ours, and we still fret over them.. But one things happens in many parent child relationships today that did not happen between John and these ones addressed in this epistle. Parents today seem to stop being an example for their children for one reason or another. I have seen many parents be so faithful to the Lord, to serving, to the house of God when their children are young and then for some reason or other stop when the children are grown. They stop serving, stop being faithful in the church seeming to think their job is finished or some sort of thing. What many fail to see is that their job is just beginning. Not only do they need to remain faithful for the children in old age, but now there are often grandchildren that need to see someone faithful to the Lord. Not long ago someone stated that they do not understand why their grandchildren seem to have no interest in church, in the Lord and all the while that is what they see in grandpa and grandma, someone with no real commitment to the Lord. John was an influence on those spiritual “Little children” and we need remain an example as we continue on for the Lord today.
