Gal 6:1-5 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. 3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. 4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For every man shall bear his own burden.

Another reason Christians seem to be so unconcerned with helping others today is a false interpretation of verse 5. Yes, there are burdens all of us need to bear, but that does not mean we should ignore the burdens of others or even that none should help us. I have heard people say “God helps those who help themselves” many times. Most of the time people say that it is to excuse them from helping others. But is that even a true statement? It is in the fact that God does help us as we struggle to stand for truth, to do the right thing, to keep a testimony and so on. But I am so glad that God also helps those who cannot help themselves, that God helps the helpless. When I was lost in sin and could do noting about it, when I was lost and there was no helping self it was Jesus Christ who saved me, who washed my sins away. Many times there have been circumstances that have no good end in sight, yet God in grace and mercy has helped me when I could not help myself. How thankful am I that God did not wait for me to help myself, that God intervened and helped me when there was no hope. When we see a brother or sister in Christ in need we are to be a help to them, not hinder them. Who can you be a help to today?
