Isa 43:1-3 But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3 For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

There are precious promises found in the Bible, some we hold so dear such as the promise of answered prayer in Jeremiah 33:3, the promise that he will never leave or forsake us in Hebrews 13:5, the promise of eternal life to all who call upon Him in Rom 10:13. There are many precious promises in the Bible. Then there are some that are not so precious to us on the surface such as some that are found in our reading this morning. In verse 2 we find that we will at times pass through waters, through rivers, and even fire in this world. In speaking of the trials of this world the Bible doesn’t say we might go through some, it says that we will. Salvation in Christ does not shield us from the normal trials and heartaches of life no matter how much we wish that it did. Yet in that verse as well we find a precious promise do we not? The promise again of His ever abiding presence. God is not the author of evil things, not the author of sorrow and pain, those things are a result of the fall, the result of sin. Yet we find we have an ever present help in time of trouble. For the Christian walking close to the Lord we find we can give thanks even for trials, even in the midst of trials for it is then we fell His presence all the more. Take heart dear friend for He stand with you in the water, in the river, and in the fire.
