1 John 1:1-3 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Our subject for the next few days will be fellowship, Christian fellowship. 1 John 1 could certainly be called the “Fellowship chapter” of the Bible. Of the 17 times the word fellowship is found in the Bible 4 of them are in this chapter. What is fellowship? I had a dear brother who is now with the Lord say that fellowship is “Two fellows in the same ship”. They would both be going the same direction, have the same end in view, would both be found doing the same things that help secure smooth sailing. Fellowship, two fellows in the same ship. It would seem that many Christians today attach little importance to fellowship. But what does God think about fellowship? In our text this morning we find the first building block for true fellowship, the Word of life. (Verses 1-2) There can be no fellowship, no Christian fellowship that is not laid upon the sure foundation of Jesus Christ. Men crave fellowship today, always have. That is why you see such clubs as the Moose and so on and so forth. Men crave fellowship with those of like mind. That is why you see such clubs as the VFW, SOI, and so on and so forth. Men, people crave fellowship. But true fellowship can be found only when people are brought together on the foundation of Jesus Christ. The first thing needed for fellowship is salvation in Christ. Then and only then can fellowship provide what God intended. Over the next few days we will look at what fellowship brings, what aids fellowship, and what hinders fellowship. Read this first chapter of 1 John and we will look into Christian fellowship.
