2 Sam 22:49-51 And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. 50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. 51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

We are a little more than a week away from Thanksgiving, an American Holiday. Things certainly have changed over the past several years concerning Thanksgiving haven’t they? Thanksgiving was a day to stop and give thanks to the God of heaven for His blessings on the individual and the nation over the past year, a day when people gathered with family, a day when people visited, and a day of true thanks to the Lord. Not so today, today we find that “Black Friday” has taken over the hearts and minds of both people and is now taking over Thanksgiving Day as well. More and more stores are opening their doors for shoppers on Thanksgiving Day, people are consumed with getting out shopping, no more are the days of being at rest at home on Thanksgiving. But should it be that way for the Christian? In our test we find David giving thanks unto the Lord among the heathen. (Verse 50) Thanksgiving ought to be for the Christian today what it used to be, a day to give thanks to the Lord, a day of reflection upon the blessings of the past year, a day of prayer for the blessings of God for the coming year. I want to look over the next few days at giving thanks unto the Lord, how the Christian is to show his or her thankfulness before God in a day when few want to even stop for a moment to say thank you.
