Ps 66:16-20 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul. 17 I cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue. 18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: 19 But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

I talk to many people in distress, people with troubles in their lives, people who are depressed and discouraged and there is often a complaint that I hear from many of them; “God doesn’t seem to answer my prayers”. Did you know that the psalmist went through a time like that in his life? Take note of verse 18 above. For David there was a time when God could not take up his part as David wished. That was during the time of David’s great sin when he was trying to cover it up. David knew that he had sinned, sinned against man and God, and God was not pleased. This sin interrupted David’s fellowship and communion with God, this sin hindered David’s prayer. But when David repented, God forgave and restored David, David could again bless God and thank God for answered prayer in his life. (Verse 19) Not ever prayer we offer up to God that goes unanswered is because of sin in our lives. The answer may very well be no if it is not the will of God for us. But at those times when God seems so far away, at those times when it seems God cannot or does not hear us, the problem may very well be within the hear of the redeemed. Let us be like David and ask God to sear our heart, to show us what may be within, and then stand right before God. When there is a sin problem all we need do is repent, confess, and God forgives and restores.
