Ps 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

To dwell in the house of the Lord forever is the final blessing bestowed on the sheep in this psalm. What a difference now between sheep owned by another shepherd and sheep owned by our good shepherd. The reason people raise sheep is for the market. Some females are kept for a few years to produce more sheep but eventually they are headed for the market place, sheep are raised for the market place. Not so with our good shepherd, His will is for us to dwell safely in His house for ever. That means while we are in this world and after we depart this world. What a blessing it is to walk with Him while in this world, a blessing that sheep of other flocks never know. To be always under His constant care, under His watchful eye, to enjoy daily His provision and protection. This is what we can have under the care of the good shepherd. Then when we leave this world it is not for the market place, it is for a dwelling place in His presence forever and ever. This makes the first verse of this psalm all the more true. As sheep in His flock we shall never be in want.
