Ps 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Jesus identifies Himself as the good shepherd in John 10 and those who have Him as their shepherd have a good shepherd. There are several things that prove that found in the 23rd Psalm. The first being that the sheep of His flock are never found in want. (Verse 1) The shepherd is constantly looking out for the flock so that all of their needs are met, even those they know little or nothing about. Sheep under a shepherd’s care do not always understand what is being done for them. They do not understand the constant need to move from one pasture to another, but they are moved. They do not know of the sleep lost by the shepherd as he watches over them during the night, but they are safe. They never understand all that is being done for them so that they are not found is want, but those things are done for them. So it is with the Christian under the care of our good shepherd. Things we know little or nothing about, things we take for granted are done for us each day so that we are not found in want. Christians will get up and go to work today without ever asking God to preserve their job for them, but He does. I drove to church two times yesterday without ever asking for traveling mercies, but I arrived safely and was delivered home in the same way. A brother from our church dropped off some fresh meat yesterday and I had never asked the Lord to provide, but He did. God’s sheep are never found in want because we have a good shepherd watching over us. We may not have all that we want in this world, but we are never found in want because He provides all that we need and most of the time without us every asking.
