Ps 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Psalm 23 is the most well known of the “Shepherd Psalms”. How many times when I am visiting people in hospitals and in my work with the local hospice am I asked to read the 23rd Psalm I could not tell you. There is comfort and peace found in these 6 verses, comfort and peace that can come only from the Lord. How sad it is then to know that for so many who asked for this psalm to be read that peace that they seek for is not found. Notice as the psalm begins that for the psalmist “The Lord” is his shepherd. The only way to find the peace that this psalm holds is to know the Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ in an intimate way, to have a close and personal relationship with Him. The Lord was and is today David’s shepherd. Is He your shepherd today? Do you know Him in a close and personal way, have you repented of sin and turned to the only one who can take that sin away. No comfort will be found in this psalm, and I would like to look at the 23rd Psalm over the next week or so, no comfort can be found in it unless and until you make the Lord your shepherd.
