August 13th, 2013 by Pastor SolleyAmos 1:1-2 The words of Amos, who was among the herdman of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 2 And he said, The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.
Amos spoke to Israel two years before the coming earthquake, two years before the hand of God would move against Israel in judgment. Israel was sinking deeper and deeper into sin and God was about to send a judgment. Amos was commissioned by God to sound a warning, God’s patience had reached its limit. (Amos 1:3-4 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron: 4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.) We need to sound the same type warning in our nation today. America is sinking deeper and deeper into sin and God must move in judgment. But who is sounding a warning today? Very few Christians seem to be concerned with those around them who are lost in sin. Few are willing to tell the lost about Jesus. Many today use the excuse that no one will listen and that may be true. But when Amos was sent he went, when Amos was called to preach he did, and when the judgment of God fell Amos was not held accountable by God. Amos did his job and God was pleased with him. In this day when very few are interested in hearing we still need to preach the gospel, when people are indifferent to Christ we still need to preach the gospel, when there seems to be no results, we still need to preach. We are accountable for what God has given us to do and like Amos we need to do. Tell someone about Jesus today.
