1 John 1:3-4 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
Fellowship with God and with other believers is vitally important in the Christian life. But how can we have and maintain that fellowship with God? The word “Fellowship” is found 16 times in the New Testament and by looking at that word we can see how to keep in fellowship with God. The Bible does tell us what not to do if we want to have fellowship with God. (Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.) One thing we cannot do is walk in the unfruitful works of darkness. In other words we cannot walk in the sins of the world, in the sins of the flesh, even in sins of the mind if we want to have fellowship with God. How can one disobey the Word of God and hope to maintain fellowship with God? It is impossible to walk in both light and darkness at the same time. Yet many professing Christians take pleasure in the unfruitful works of darkness. We may be actively engaged in open sin but many watch things on the TV, listen to things in the area of music that feed the flesh and promote open sin and rebellion against God, we engage in the unfruitful works of darkness. By doing so we hinder our fellowship with God. Most would not allow a person to come into their home and take the name of the Lord in vain, to use all types of foul language, to take their clothes off and commit fornication. Most would not allow a person to chant and sing about such things in their home. But many will watch and listen to those things and think they do no harm. All the while we hinder our fellowship with God. What is it in your life that keeps you tied to the unfruitful works of darkness and hinders your fellowship with God?
