Jude 1-4 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: 2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Exactly who is it that we have to contend for over the gospel? There are some named in our text and several named in the Bible. Jesus warned that we need beware of the Pharisees and Sadducees in Matt 16:6. There were the intellectuals of the day, even smarter than Jesus and in their thinking smarter than God. They could tell a person what the Bible really means when it says something altogether different. There are many like that today. Reformed theology teaches limited atonement and infant baptism. Try and find that in the Bible and you cannot not. The Bible warns to beware of the dogs and evil workers in Phil 3:2. This is a dog with a mean streak, striking out at all who come near in a vicious manner. Try and point out error to one who embraces and you find they will react like a mean dog, sneaking around and trying to take a bite out of you. There are many like that today, preaching of love and tolerance in all spiritual matters until one disagrees with them and then there is an attack. The Bible warns of the creeps in our text. (Verse 4) Those who creep into churches with an agenda and they would be happy to see that church split by a false gospel they introduce. There are many we need contend with today, but praise God we are not in the fight alone. We have the Word of God for truth, the Spirit of God for power and the presence of Christ for comfort in the fight.
