February 12th, 2013 by Pastor SolleyActs 2:38-42 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Here is the beginning of the New Testament church, as Peter preached that first message he called for Israel to “Save yourselves from this untoward generation”. The church would be the answer, the gospel would be the answer, salvation would be the answer for those in need. What is an untoward generation? The word means warped, perverse, or crooked. The word takes on a very prophetic meaning when you consider the world we are living in today, warped, perverse, to say the least. Where is the answer for all of this, where is the hope for people today? It is found in the same place as it was when the Spirit of God gave those words to Peter, hope is found in the church. Hope is found where you can hear the gospel message, hope is found where you can find Jesus, hope is found where you can find forgiveness of your sin, hope is found where you can find salvation. So many today are indifferent to the church, to the house of God, so many mock those who are given to the church, but those very same ones find themselves drowning in an untoward generation.
