February 5th, 2013 by Pastor Solley1 Tim 3:15-16 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
The church is the “Church of the living God”. We see also in our text that is the “Pillar”. When you think of a pillar and how they are used two things can come to mind. First, a pillar is used to give something strength. I have hidden pillars in my house holding up the floor. There is no beauty to them, but they give the strength that needs be there to keep the house from falling into the foundation. So does the local church give strength to the believer in Christ. When we are joined with others who are of the same mind we draw strength one from another. When we meet for the preaching of the Word of God we are strengthened and made fit for the spiritual battle we are in. When we meet for the preaching of the Word of God we are instructed and made servants who can be of use for our Lord in this world. A pillar gives strength. Another use for a pillar is for beauty. Many decorative pillars adorn buildings, they do not hold the building up, but they add beauty to an already solid structure. So it is with the church, it adds beauty to the world. Not the building we worship in, but the Christians who dwell in Christ. There is a spiritual beauty found in the world through the church and those who make up the true church. Pillars are needed for both strength and beauty and so the church is needed in the world today.
