December 3rd, 2012 by Pastor Solley1 Sam 11:1-3 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. 2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. 3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
A powerful enemy had risen up against Israel. Nahash was a ruthless man and he came against the people with one intent, to conquer and destroy. The children of Israel went out to make a covenant with him in verse 1 above. If they could only make a compromise perhaps they could live in peace. We see the nature of that man inverse 2. He would make a covenant with them if he could blind them. My friend that is the same type of covenant the world presents to the Christian today. Many who profess Christianity try and make a covenant with the world so they can live at peace in this world. But the world will do to the Christian trying to live in it the same as Nahash would do to the people, blind them and make them slaves. A believer in Christ living in the world will find him or herself a slave to the world and blinded to spiritual things. Keep this truth in mind the next time you consider making a compromise, a covenant with the world.
