Jonah 2:1-7 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, 2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. 4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. 6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. 7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

How long before Jonah remembered the Lord? To answer this one needs to go back to the point when Jonah lifted himself above God. God commissioned the prophet to go to Nineveh but Jonah thought that city and those people unworthy to receive the gospel message, Jonah lifted himself above God. How long before Jonah decided to run from God did call direct him to Nineveh? How long did Jonah argue with God over this? How long before Jonah decided to run from God? These things we are not told, yet we know where those actions took Jonah. Even after being thrown into the sea the prophet had to spend three days in the belly of the fish before he remembered the Lord, before he remembered that he answered to God and not God to him. What do we put ourselves through today because we forget that God is in heaven and we on the earth, because we forget that God has authority over all and not us over God? What do we put ourselves through today because we do not remember? Many things we go through in this life, many things we see, many things we endure we do not agree with, yet we need to remember. We need to remember that God has authority over all and God’s way is always the best way. Don’t be like Jonah and forget.
