Prov 27:17-19 Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. 18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: So he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured. 19 As in water face answereth to face, So the heart of man to man.

What type of friends should one seek to surround himself with? Some look for those who will always agree with whatever they do, and they in turn will agree with all that their friends do. It is appealing to always be viewed as right, to always have someone telling you that you are doing the right thing. But is that what is best for us. We see in Prov 27:17 that a man should sharpen the countenance of a friend. In other words just as iron is used to sharpen iron, grind away the dull edge of a knife, grind away the nicks in a knife blade, so should a friend sharpen a friend. A true friend will point out things that are not right in your life, things that make you less than what you should be. The advice of a true friend will sharpen you. Seek out Christian friends that will tell you the truth in love and be the same to others. “Yes men” are nice, but they are not always what is best for you.
