Rom 1:1-7 PAUL, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I wonder how many or how few Christians realize what it is to be a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ? The word servant in verse one is the Greek word “Doulos” and it means one who is a slave in the sense of becoming the property of an owner. It could be used in the same way that the word slave was used in our nation so many years ago before the Civil War. When one was a slave they made no decisions on their own, they always followed the orders and direction of the master. Slavery was a hard life for most because of masters or owners who abused and misused the slaves. For some who had owners of character it was a better life although they were never free. Christian we are to be a servant of the Lord, a slave to Jesus Christ. Now we need not worry about the character or love of the master. No one has more love for you, cares for you, and will take better care of you than Jesus. But many Christians make life difficult for themselves because they will not follow the direction and orders of the Lord. You are not a good servant if you do not follow the way of the Lord, obey His Word, submit to Him at ever turn. That is the problem many of us often have, we don’t like to follow orders. When a slave did that he or she made life more difficult for themselves and so do we. Now they had the excuse that their owners seldom had the interest of the slave in mind but not us. The Lord always has our best interest in mind. What type of servant then are we?
