32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. 33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; 34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. 35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
What Jesus Christ did for man He did alone. No man, no angel could have a part with Him in paying the price for the sin of man. What Jesus Christ did for man, for you and for me, He did alone. But Jesus paid that price for sin so not one of us would have to suffer and die alone. No man has to die alone as Jesus did. When we come to Him in faith for forgiveness of sin and salvation we never have to be alone again. And the gospel has power to save today, just as it did then. Just as sure as the thief who repented did not die alone and was with Jesus in Paradise so does the born again believer die in the Lord, die in Christ, and is with Him in heaven. No one has to die alone. Last evening I had the joy of visiting with an 86 year old man in the hospital. I was told on Tuesday that if I tried to talk to him he would ask me to leave. That he had said he knew he was going to hell when he died and he was happy with that. But last night facing death and all alone he was open to the gospel. His family was around him but he knew he was all alone. He listened to the gospel, listened as we talked about hell, sin, repentance, and Jesus Christ. Listened as the verses were given from the Bible. And then he prayed, “Jesus, please save me”. I will visit with him again today but one thing I know, that man did not spend the night alone.
