10 My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
11 For, lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone; 12 The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come, And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; 13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, And the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. 14 O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, Let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; For sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. 15 Take us the foxes, The little foxes, that spoil the vines: For our vines have tender grapes.
What is the problem with the “Little foxes” in verse 15? They are cute, a little fox is, they cause no harm. What is the problem with the little foxes? The little foxes spoil the vines. Most people don’t realize that a fox does eat fruit. There are three spices of fox in Palestine and all of them, like all foxes eat fruit. But not only do they eat fruit, they destroy the vine as well, they “Spoil the vines”. If not kept out of the vineyard they will eventually destroy it. What does that have to do with us? I believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible. We see in this book the relationship between Solomon and his wife, a beautiful picture of wedded love. But we also see a type of the love of Jehovah for Israel and a type of love of Christ for the church. A literal interpretation does allow for this. That being the case the little foxes are anything that will hinder and harm our relationship with the Lord. Thinking of marriage I have never seen a home break up over big things. It always starts with little things not being addressed and them turning into big things. In almost 30 years in the ministry that has always been the situation when couples come for counseling. It started with little things and they turned into big things. The same in our walk with the Lord. A Christian does not awake in the morning and find his or her spiritual walk with the Lord destroyed by a big sin. Sin starts small, little things not addressed, and they turn into bigger things. We have to be on the watch for “Little foxes” in our lives. Left alone they will destroy the vine, the spiritual vine that links us to Christ. We will not lose salvation but we will lose any opportunity to bring forth fruit in our lives. And doesn’t Christ want us to bear fruit? Watch out for the little foxes.
