16:1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
Even though Abraham believed and obeyed God, even though God was blessing Abraham, there were times in the life of Abraham when he struggled spiritually. This is one of those times. Why not wait on the God you believe in and obey? It is evident that his wife ran out of patience, but what of Abraham? When Abraham gave in a took matters into his own hands it brought about trouble in his life. Trouble between Abraham and his wife, the handmaid and even the child. And it brought about trouble that still exists today. It would have been better to wait on the Lord. For sure there are times in our lives when we question what God is doing and why. Times in our lives when we run out of patience. Times when we want to give in to the voice of the world and of others. Times when we struggle spiritually. It is in those times when we need to wait upon the Lord. Be sure that if we give in as Abraham did, as many of us often do, there is trouble to follow. To wait on the Lord is not always the easy thing, but it is always the better thing.
