4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) 3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And he must needs go through Samaria. 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
The “Must needs” of Jesus life make a wonderful study. Jesus leaving Judaea was going to Galilee. The Bible tells us that He “Must needs” go through Samaria. Not the Jews would not ordinarily do this, they would go around because they had no dealing with the Samaritans. The woman at the well had that right. Why then did Jesus need to go that way? It was a way of service. There was a lost soul that way that needed Christ, needed redemption, needed to repent. Jesus went that way to give her the gospel. Many point out the lack of Christians who are serving the Lord today. Most have no desire or interest is serving. Sitting in the church, giving an offering, they are willing to do those things. But doing more to them is not an option. There is no “Must needs” in their lives. Jesus followed the leading of the Holy Spirit in His life and a woman that needed salvation received it from Him. How great would be the blessings in our lives if we realized that we must serve, must following the leading of the Holy Spirit, must be given to the Lord? People think they will be missing something if they give all to Christ. Friends that “Must needs” be the case in our lives. We miss much more when we don’t follow Him, when we are not given to Him, when there are no “Must needs” in our lives. Let us begin today to follow the example of Christ.
