16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. 18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
As Joseph went to find out his brothers were doing with the flocks at his father’s request he was going to a moment that would change his life forever. The dreams mentioned in verse 20 are the dreams of the stars bowing down to him and the harvest of the field bowing down to him. God had revealed to Joseph that he would elevated to the place of authority over his brothers and he shared those dreams with them. Now they would cast him into a pit and they wanted to kill him but Reuben stepped in and stopped that. What was their reasoning? Let us see what will become of his dreams. They hated him in part because of the dream and wanted to prove him wrong. They were not able to kill him but now his dreams would be tested by trials. What if Joseph had become angered at God and had turned away from the Lord in Egypt? What would have become of his dreams? It is the same with our faith today in face of the trials of life. Do you ever wonder how many people have been discouraged or even turned away from the Lord by the way some Christians deal with trials in their life? I know many who have shouted for all to hear how much they love Jesus. It was good that they did that. But those same people have left the church and walk no more with the Lord. What happened? In the everyday trials and circumstances of life they grew weary, blamed their troubles on God, and walked away from Him. How many of the lost look at them now and say that type of faith is not for me? What did become of their dreams? The dreams of Joseph were real because his faith was real. What about yours?
