Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Have you ever noticed how the lost went to Jesus to “Hear Him”? It is no wonder that men went to Him to see a miracle and many did that. Herod was glad to see Jesus because he wanted to see a miracle. But here in our text we see the lost coming to Jesus to hear Him. How that has changed today in that it seems almost impossible to get the lost to church. No one it seems wants to take the time to hear the gospel. What has changed? The heart of man is still the same, the need is the same, people still need to hear the gospel and still need to be saved. The ministry of the Holy Spirit has not changed, Jesus drawing all men unto Himself has not changed. Ever wonder what has changed? I believe it is the zeal and the life of the believer in Christ that has changed. When the lost looked at Jesus then they saw others who had been touched by Him and had lives changed by Him. They saw fishermen who left all that they had and gave their lives to Christ. They saw a tax collector leave the riches of working for Rome and follow Jesus. They saw another meet Jesus and then begin to pay back all that he had stolen four times worth. They saw the change that took place in people after they met Jesus Christ. That is what has changed today, that is what is missing today. Most who claim to know Him today show no evidence of change in their lives. There is nothing for the lost to see that would make them want to hear what Jesus has to say. How many have followed you to church to hear what Jesus has to say?
