38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Following closely behind the command to be baptized is the practice of Communion or the Lord’s Table. The breaking of bread and fellowship in verse 42 is around the Lord’s Table I believe. This was not only a practice of the early church it is also a command of Jesus.
(1 Cor 11:24-26) This is another mark of identification with Jesus Christ. It saddens me today to think how little most Christians, at least professing Christians think of the Communion Table. This is one service all should do all to attend. We hold our Communion Service the first Sunday night of each month. But so many of God’s children by their profession of faith ignore the service. They stay away most likely doing little more than watching TV. Yet this is something that Christ Himself instituted and commands that we keep. The commands of Jesus are not a take it or leave it proposition. What Jesus commands us to do He expects us to do unless I am missing something in the Bible. Why then do so many think they can pick what they want and ignore what they want? Think about this. If Jesus commanded His children to do it then, doesn’t He want His children to do it now?
