Eph 4:30-32 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Here we find a command “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God”. It is possible then to grieve the Holy Spirit. The word means to irritate, to sorrow, to burden, distress. How can this be done to the Holy Spirit and who can do it? There are two classes of people who can grieve the Holy Spirit. First, the lost person, the unsaved person can grieve the Holy Spirit of God. They do this when they reject the Lord Jesus Christ and His offer of salvation to all. It is the Holy Spirit that sheds light on Jesus Christ in this world of sin. He does use the Bible, preaching, the witness and testimony of the Christian, and even nature as His witness but it is the Holy Spirit that sheds light on Jesus Christ. (John 16:7-10) When the lost refuse to receive Jesus Christ as personal savior they grieve the Holy Spirit. But it does go deeper than that. The Spirit of God will continue to send conviction to the lost, continue to send the truth to them. Each time they reject they grieve the Spirit more. Some will then go to the extreme of mocking the name of Jesus Christ, to blasphemy and they grieve the Spirit more. Some will then go deeper and deeper into the darkness of sin and live the perverted lifestyles of the world. They grieve the Spirit yet more. Finally they become so hard to the gospel they the Spirit of God can no longer bring them under conviction. They have sorrowed the Spirit of God and grieved Him to a point that they will never repent and be saved. As people we never know when one has reached this point so we continue to witness, continue to pray, do all that the Spirit of God enables us to do to bring them to Christ. I am not a Calvinist, people are not born this hard, all can be saved. But many have grieved the Spirit of God and hardened their own hearts to the Lord. All we need to do in order to see this truth is look around at the world we are living in. The lost can grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Yet there is another group of people that can grieve Him as well. We will look at them tomorrow.
