December 9th, 2011 by Pastor SolleyCol 2:6-10 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
I often think of tradition at this time of year. Tradition is not a bad thing unless it takes you away from God’s truth. Much of our Christmas tradition does exactly that. Children are made to believe that a fat jolly man in a red suit brings them presents at Christmas time. All is made to center around what they will find under a decorated tree in their home. Make a list and remember to tell Santa what you want for Christmas. Be good because Santa knows if you have been bad or good. Leave cookies out for him and he will leave you more. Harmless traditions people say. Yet not harmless when they turn one away from God’s truth. Christmas is about giving but not about presents one to another. It is about God’s gift of His Son to man. Christmas did lead to a tree but not a tree decorated in a corner of your home but a cross upon which our Savior died. This Christmas may our focus be on the truth of God’s Word and not so much on the tradition of man. Yes we have a tree in our home and yes we will exchange presents at Christmas time. But we will also be in the house of God on Christmas to thank the Father for the gift of His Son and thank the Son for the gift of eternal life.
