July 19th, 2011 by Pastor SolleyJohn 13:13-21 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. 18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
All who were with Jesus that night said that they loved Him, that they would serve Him, that they would follow Him. Yet we find Jesus troubled in spirit. Why? Many things troubled Jesus that night. There was the weight of the sin of all mankind about to be placed upon Him, there was the rejection by Israel of Him as the Messiah, there was the cross, but even more was the betrayal of one of those who had followed Him for three years. Judas would betray the Lord. Not I don’t believe Judas was ever saved, ever born again, but I wonder how many times I betray the Lord? Not selling the Lord as Judas did, not even with an open denial. But I wonder how many time I betray Him by not speaking to the lost when the Spirit gives the opportunity, not turning away from something that I should not look at on the TV or in public, not defending the name of the Lord when I hear it used in vain, not doing what I could for the Lord. Lord help us not betray you.
