Luke 8:9-15 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10?And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11?Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12?Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13?They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14?And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15?But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

I was walking in the woods the other day and came across a huge tree. So that that I could not possibly reach around it even 5 or 6 feet up the trunk. But there was a problem, the tree was laying on the ground, blown over by the wind some time ago. As I walked around the tree, the root system was exposed. It rose well over my head, 8 – 10 feet across. I could such a tree fall? The roots had no depth, they held perhaps 2 – 4 inches of dirt in them but they had no real depth. Even though they spread out when the right type of wind came the tree toppled. It reminded of this passage of Scripture. How many Christians are like that tree, like the seed scattered on the rock? They gladly come to church, sing the songs of worship, give an offering, seem to pay attention as the Word is preached. But when they leave the Church house that is the extent of their Christianity. No service for the Lord, no Bible reading at home, no real prayer life. They have a root system but no depth. Watch these ones when the winds of adversity blow upon them. They are easily toppled just like that huge tree in the woods near my home. Christian, we need to have some depth. Don’t receive the Word of the surface of your mind, receive it into the depth of your heart.
